TIE Card Spain: What It Is and How to Get One

A TIE displays identity details, the NIE, a card number, validity and authorised-status information, with administrative and machine-readable fields on the reverse. It evidences the underlying status rather than creating it. Where required, the current national rule describes the application period as one month.

A TIE card in Spain is the identity document Spain issues to foreign residents holding a visa or authorization for more than six months, except holders of a seasonal residence-and-work visa. It is applied for in person on Form EX-17 within one month of entering Spain, the authorization being granted, or it taking effect. What Is a TIE Card in Spain?

A TIE, or Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, is Spain’s foreigner identity card. Article 209 of Real Decreto 1155/2024 gives anyone issued a visa or authorization to stay over six months one month to apply.

Article 209 sets the duty and the deadline in a single sentence. A foreign national issued a visa or an authorization to remain in Spain for more than six months has “the right and duty to obtain the foreigner identity card,” and must request it in person within one month of entering Spain, or of the authorization being granted or taking effect. Holders of a seasonal residence-and-work visa are exempt from the TIE duty under Article 4.2 of Ley Organica 4/2000. Real Decreto 1155/2024 repealed the earlier regulation approved by Real Decreto 557/2011, and it entered into force on 20 May 2025, six months after its publication in the BOE.

Article 206 of the same regulation lists the card among the documents that prove a foreign national’s situation in Spain, alongside the passport, the visa and the administrative resolution authorizing the stay. The NIE runs on its own form, its own fee and its own procedure, and the NIE guide covers that number in full.

What Documents Do You Need for a TIE Application?

The Policia Nacional’s TIE procedure page names two required items, and Form EX-17 adds one instruction about copies.

• Form EX-17, the TIE application. The procedure page names it as “Modelo de Solicitud de Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) (Formulario EX17)”. The form’s instructions call for the original and a copy, and it carries a single signature line.
• Proof of payment of the Modelo 790, codigo 012 fee. The page names it as “Justificante de pago Tasa modelo 790 Codigo 012”. The amount depends on which line of the fee schedule your card falls under.

Can You Apply for a TIE Card Without a Lawyer?

Yes. Article 209 puts the request in the applicant’s own hands, and the national procedure page names two documents to bring.

Three situations merit advice before you proceed: the one-month window has passed, no appointment is available before it expires, or the office has asked for a resubmission under its local checklist.

What Is the Difference Between a TIE and an NIE?

The NIE is a number assigned on request, and the TIE is a card issued to someone who already holds a visa or a residence authorization. Article 206 of Real Decreto 1155/2024 lists both among the documents that prove a foreign national’s situation in Spain.

The NIE runs on Form EX-15 and costs 9.84 euros for assignment at the interested party’s request. The Policia Nacional’s NIE assignment procedure covers foreigners connected to Spain through economic, professional or social interests. It sets two conditions: the applicant must not be in an irregular situation in Spain, and the reasons for the request must be communicated.

The TIE runs on Form EX-17 under Article 209, and its trigger is a visa or an authorization to remain for more than six months. The NIE guide covers the number itself.

How Long Does It Take to Get a TIE Card?

Timing has two office-dependent stages.

The first runs from the grant of your authorization to the appointment. Slot availability varies by office. The cita previa guide covers how booking works.

The second runs from the appointment to the card being ready, and production timing also varies by office. Ask the office that takes the fingerprints when collection is expected. One date is fixed regardless: the Article 209 month runs from entry or from the grant of the authorization, whatever the appointment calendar looks like.

What Mistakes Delay a TIE Application?

Six pitfalls come straight out of the rules and the form.

• Reading the deadline as 30 days. Article 209 says one calendar month. The two counts diverge by a day in every month with 31 days.
• Letting the month run out. Article 53.1.h of Ley Organica 4/2000 classifies a failure to meet the Article 4.2 duty as an infraccion grave, a serious infraction, and Article 55.1.b fines that at 501 to 10,000 euros. What an office does about a late first application is not addressed by either.
• Bringing the form without the copy. The EX-17’s own instructions call for the original and a copy.
• Ticking the wrong box in section 4.1. It offers TARJETA INICIAL, RENOVACION DE TARJETA and the duplicate option.
• Paying the wrong fee line. The Modelo 790 codigo 012 schedule prices a first grant, a renewal, a long-duration card and the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement card at four different amounts, and it labels no line a duplicate. Article 209.9 makes a replacement card expressly not a renewal, so do not default to the renewal line for one.
• Going to the wrong office, or working from an unconfirmed list. File at the Oficina de Extranjeria or Comisaria de Policia that corresponds to you. An office may also ask for more than the national page names, so confirm both before you travel.
