How to Book an NIE Appointment in Spain

This guide covers the cita previa, the appointment the booking system issues for an NIE application in Spain, administered under Spain's current immigration regime, Ley Organica 4/2000 and its reglamento, Real Decreto 1155/2024. It sets out the two booking routes, the in-Spain portal and the consulate system abroad, what to have ready before booking, the mistakes worth checking before you book, and how a lawyer already handling a purchase or an immigration case can add this step to that work.

Questions

Common questions

How do you book an NIE appointment in Spain?
You book it online through one of two routes. Applicants in Spain use the national cita previa system, where NIE appointments are administered by the Ministerio del Interior branch of the service; most other extranjeria procedures go through the Delegaciones y Subdelegaciones del Gobierno instead. Applicants outside Spain book through the Spanish consulate covering their place of residence, a different system on a different domain from the in-Spain portal. Both routes lead to the same appointment type, the NIE-assignment cita previa.
What do I do if no appointments are available?
Appointment availability varies by office. Check the official portal again and see whether another office in the same province has availability, while confirming that the office can take your application.
Can I book an NIE appointment from outside Spain?
Yes. You book through the Spanish consulate covering your place of residence, using the consulate's own page. The in-Spain portal does not apply to you. The two run as separate systems on separate domains, so check your specific consulate's page for how it takes appointments.
Are paid appointment-booking services legitimate?
Use the official national portal or the consulate page for your place of residence. This guide does not recommend third-party slot-grabbing tools or sellers promising a guaranteed appointment.
Can a lawyer get me an NIE appointment faster?
A lawyer cannot bypass the official appointment system. A solicitor or attorney already handling your property purchase or immigration case can add booking and managing the cita previa to that work.
Can someone else book my NIE appointment for me?
Yes, using a power of attorney. A power granted before a foreign notary needs legalizacion or an apostille before it can be used in Spain, according to the Consejo General del Notariado. Power of attorney in Spain covers how that document is drawn up.
What happens if I miss my NIE appointment?
Rebook through the same official portal or consulate page you used the first time. Any consequence or rebooking restriction depends on the instructions shown by that office.
Is the NIE appointment system the same as the TIE appointment system?
Both sit inside the same national cita previa system and the same Ministerio del Interior branch of it. Select the option labelled for NIE assignment, not the TIE-card procedure. The TIE card guide covers the TIE appointment and card itself.
How long does it take to get the NIE certificate once you attend the appointment?
Appointment availability and application processing are separate waits. NIE number Spain covers the application and issuance timeline; appointment availability varies by office.
