Golden Visa Spain Alternatives: Which Visa Replaces It

Spain closed the Golden Visa's investor-residence chapter, Articles 63 to 67 of Ley 14/2013, on 3 April 2025, and no non-property investment route survived alongside it. This guide sets out what closed, what a Golden Visa holder's existing permit still allows, and which live routes, from the Non-Lucrative Visa to the Digital Nomad Visa, now carry the applicants who would have used it.

Questions

Common questions

Can a US citizen live permanently in Spain?
Yes, through a live residence route whose eligibility conditions they meet. Check the page for that route for its current renewal and long-term-residence terms.
Is the Spain Golden Visa still available?
No. The investor residence-visa chapter, Articles 63 to 67 of Ley 14/2013, was left without content from 3 April 2025 by disposicion final vigesimoprimera.1 of Ley Organica 1/2025. Every investment route that chapter covered, real estate included, closed on that date for a new applicant.
Do I need a lawyer to change my visa route after the Golden Visa ended?
It is not a legal requirement for most routes, but the eligibility rules differ enough by route, and by whether you filed or held a Golden Visa before 3 April 2025, that a lawyer or solicitor catches mismatches a reader would miss alone. Advisors in Spain offers exactly that: a consultation with an immigration lawyer who checks your case for those mismatches.
What is the closest visa to Spain's Golden Visa now?
No single route replaces it exactly. The Non-Lucrative Visa is the closest in structure for an applicant supported by income earned outside Spain, since it asks for no capital investment either, though the two routes qualify applicants on different grounds. The Non-Lucrative Visa's own page carries its current income and documentation requirements.
Can I still apply for Spanish residency by investment?
No. Article 63 of Ley 14/2013 defined every investment type, the €500,000 property purchase, the €2,000,000 in public debt, the €1,000,000 options in company shares, investment funds or bank deposits, and the general-interest business project, inside one article, and Articles 64 to 67 governed how any of them worked. Ley 25/2015 is the text that set those figures; Ley Organica 1/2025 repealed the whole chapter together, so no non-property investment route survived either.
Is there still an investor visa for Spain?
No, not under the chapter that used to grant one. Articles 63 to 67 of Ley 14/2013 covered every pre-2025 investment type together and were repealed together.
Do I need to buy property to move to Spain?
No. Property ownership alone stopped granting Spanish residency when the Golden Visa's real-estate route closed on 3 April 2025. The Non-Lucrative Visa and the Digital Nomad Visa do not require a property purchase at all; their own pages carry what each does require.
How much money do I need for the Non-Lucrative Visa?
Check the Non-Lucrative Visa page for its income and savings requirements.
Can digital nomads still get a visa for Spain?
Yes. The Digital Nomad Visa sits outside the closed chapter of the same law and remains open to qualified remote employees and freelancers earning from outside Spain. The Digital Nomad Visa page covers its own income and eligibility figures.
What happens to people who already have a Golden Visa?
It depends on when the visa or authorization was granted. A Golden Visa valid on 3 April 2025 keeps its validity for the term it was issued for, and a renewal filed after that date is decided under the rules in force on the date the original authorization was granted. Confirm how the transitional rule applies to later renewals or a change of route.
How long does it take to get a replacement visa after the Golden Visa ended?
It takes a different amount of time on each route. The route pages linked in this guide carry their own current timelines.
